Protect Civil Liberties and End Federal Overreach in Washington, D.C.

Related Article: In Washington police takeover, federal agents and National Guard take on new tasks - abqjournal.com - Friday, August 15, 2025, 12:13:53 AM Eastern Daylight Time

Target: President of the United States, Department of Justice, Congress, and the Mayor of Washington, D.C.

Goal: We call for the immediate withdrawal of federal agents and National Guard troops from non-traditional law enforcement roles in Washington, D.C., and demand an end to the militarized response to peaceful demonstrations.

Recent actions have seen federal agents and the National Guard deployed across Washington, D.C., expanding their roles beyond their typical mandates. These measures threaten the civil liberties of residents and demonstrators, raising concerns about federal overreach and the militarization of public spaces.

Federal agents, whose primary responsibilities include investigating serious crimes such as drug trafficking and cybercrime, have recently been deployed throughout the nation's capital. Their presence, alongside the National Guard and Park Police, has shifted from protecting monuments to managing crowds and suppressing demonstrations. This escalation undermines the right to peaceful assembly and sets a dangerous precedent for the use of force against civilians.

We urge our elected officials and government agencies to respect constitutional rights and prioritize community-led approaches to public safety. The militarization of our streets does not address the root causes of unrest and only serves to intimidate residents and stifle free expression.
