Goal: We call on the US government to immediately revoke punitive tariffs on Indian imports, respect India's right to make independent economic choices, and pursue diplomatic solutions that foster peace and global economic justice.
The US administration has announced a steep 25% tariff increase on imports from India, raising the total duty to 50%, in response to India’s ongoing purchase of Russian oil. This move, framed as an attempt to isolate Russia economically, instead punishes India—America’s key trading partner and the world’s largest democracy—for exercising its right to make decisions in its national interest.
These tariffs threaten $40 billion in Indian exports, jeopardizing jobs, livelihoods, and economic growth in both countries. India’s government and leading oil companies have made clear that their purchases are based on economic considerations, not political alliances. The US’s unilateral action undermines the principles of fair trade and international cooperation, and risks deepening global divisions at a time when diplomacy is urgently needed.
We urge the US government to reverse these harmful tariffs, engage in meaningful dialogue with India, and prioritize peaceful, multilateral solutions to international conflicts. Economic coercion is not the path to peace or justice.
