Target: United States President, U.S. State Department, United Nations Human Rights Council, and international human rights organizations

Goal: We call on the United States government and international community to take concrete action to secure Jimmy Lai’s immediate release and to defend the rights of all those targeted under Hong Kong's national security law.

Jimmy Lai, a prominent Hong Kong journalist and pro-democracy advocate, has been unjustly imprisoned under the city's sweeping national security law. His continued detention and prosecution represent a grave threat to press freedom, human rights, and the right to peaceful protest.

Jimmy Lai, founder of the now-shuttered Apple Daily newspaper, has spent over 1,600 days in solitary confinement since his arrest in 2020. He faces life imprisonment for his pro-democracy activism and journalism, under charges of 'colluding with foreign forces' and 'sedition.' These charges are based on Hong Kong's draconian national security law, which criminalizes peaceful dissent and has been used to silence critics of the Chinese government.

Mr. Lai, 77, has been denied access to his chosen legal counsel and independent medical care, despite serious health concerns. His case is emblematic of a broader crackdown on press freedom and civil liberties in Hong Kong, where public protest and independent journalism have been effectively outlawed.

We urge the United States government and the international community to take a stand for human rights, demand Jimmy Lai's immediate release, and pressure Hong Kong authorities to repeal the national security law and restore fundamental freedoms.
