Restore Sanctuary Protections in Washington, D.C.

Target: Attorney General Pam Bondi, Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C., and District of Columbia City Council

Goal: Reinstate local sanctuary policies and limit cooperation between D.C. police and federal immigration enforcement agencies.

Recent actions by Attorney General Pam Bondi have reversed critical sanctuary city policies in Washington, D.C., exposing immigrant communities to increased risk and undermining local autonomy. We must act now to restore these protections and ensure the safety and dignity of all D.C. residents.

On Thursday, Attorney General Pam Bondi rescinded longstanding directives that protected immigrant communities in Washington, D.C., from unjust targeting and deportation. By scrapping these sanctuary city policies, local police are now required to fully cooperate with federal immigration agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This move threatens the safety, rights, and trust of immigrant residents, while undermining the authority of local officials to set policies that reflect the values and needs of their communities.

These changes allow D.C. police to arrest individuals based solely on administrative immigration warrants, share immigration information during routine stops, and transfer detainees to ICE without a criminal warrant signed by a judge. Such measures erode community trust in law enforcement, discourage victims and witnesses from coming forward, and put families at risk of separation.

We call on local and federal officials to immediately reinstate D.C.'s sanctuary policies, restore local control over policing, and protect the human rights of all residents—regardless of immigration status.
