The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has brought immense suffering to millions, and the world yearns for a just and sustainable peace. However, recent proposals from U.S. leadership—suggesting that Ukraine must forgo reclaiming Crimea and abandon its NATO membership aspirations—threaten to legitimize aggression and undermine international law.
Forcing Ukraine to accept the loss of Crimea or to remain outside of NATO not only violates the principle of self-determination but also emboldens future acts of territorial aggression worldwide. Peace must not come at the expense of justice, democracy, or the rights of the Ukrainian people.
