Demand Real Security and Sovereignty for Ukraine—No Concessions to Aggression

Target: President Joe Biden, U.S. Congress, European Union leadership, and NATO Secretary General

Goal: Ensure that U.S. and European leaders uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and right to self-determination, and refuse to legitimize Russian territorial gains or block Ukraine’s NATO aspirations.

Recent high-level talks between U.S. and Russian leaders have produced proposals that would force Ukraine to abandon its aspirations for NATO membership and accept the loss of Crimea. These terms, promoted by President Trump, undermine Ukraine's sovereignty and reward Russian aggression. We call on U.S. and European leaders to reject any settlement that compromises Ukraine's territorial integrity or its right to choose its own alliances.

The latest proposals emerging from U.S.-Russia negotiations threaten to set a dangerous precedent for international law and democracy. President Trump's insistence that Ukraine must renounce its claim to Crimea and abandon NATO membership ambitions echoes longstanding Russian demands and undermines Ukraine's sovereignty.

Crimea was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014, in violation of international law. Forcing Ukraine to accept this loss would not only reward aggression but also embolden future violations of national borders. Similarly, blocking Ukraine's pursuit of NATO membership strips the country of its right to choose its own security arrangements and leaves it vulnerable to further attacks.

While the prospect of 'NATO-style' security guarantees has been floated, these remain vague and unenforceable without Ukraine's full integration into Western security structures. History has shown that half-measures and unenforceable promises do not deter aggression. The Budapest Memorandum failed to protect Ukraine then, and any new agreement must not repeat these mistakes.

We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and President Zelenskyy’s call for enduring security guarantees and the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity. We urge Western leaders to reject any settlement that legitimizes Russia’s land grabs or undermines Ukraine’s right to self-determination.
