Target: President of the United States, United States Trade Representative, US Congress, and major US apparel brands sourcing from Lesotho
Goal: Urge the US government to immediately lift punitive tariffs on Lesotho's textile exports, provide reparations for affected workers, and ensure fair trade policies that protect vulnerable communities.
The imposition of unprecedented US tariffs—first at 50%, then reduced to 15%—on Lesotho's textile exports has destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of women and their families. As the largest private employer in Lesotho, the textile industry is a lifeline for tens of thousands, particularly women, whose jobs support entire communities.
Since the tariffs were announced, factories have laid off over 7,000 workers, leaving them unable to pay rent or feed their families. Many have been forced to return to rural villages with few economic opportunities, while others have risked their lives crossing into South Africa to work in dangerous, illegal mining operations. Children have lost access to education as their parents cannot afford school fees, and the local economy has suffered as small businesses lose their customer base.
These tariffs were imposed with no regard for the devastating impact on one of the world's poorest nations. The difference in tariff rates between Lesotho and neighboring countries like Kenya and Eswatini is driving companies to relocate, threatening to permanently erase the progress made under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
We call on the US government and major apparel brands to take responsibility for the harm caused and to act immediately to restore justice for Lesotho's workers. Fair trade must prioritize human rights and economic justice over profit and political maneuvering.
