Target: Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Goal: Urge the Japanese government and international partners to advocate for a fair, transparent, and inclusive peace process in Ukraine that centers human rights, democracy, and the voices of those most affected.
The upcoming talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have raised concerns in Japan and across Asia about the potential for a rushed peace agreement that may not fully address the needs and rights of the Ukrainian people. While efforts to end Russia's invasion are welcome, peace must not come at the expense of justice, democracy, or the sovereignty of Ukraine.
Japan, as a key member of the international coalition supporting Ukraine, has a responsibility to ensure that any diplomatic process is open, consultative, and upholds international law. The voices of Ukrainian civil society, displaced people, and frontline communities must be included in any negotiations. We call on the Japanese government to publicly commit to these principles and use its influence to encourage all parties to pursue a peace that is truly fair and lasting.
