Target: International Maritime Organization (IMO), National Governments, Maritime Regulatory Authorities
Goal: Urge world governments and maritime authorities to support and strengthen the IMO's net-zero emissions proposal for shipping, ensuring a sustainable and just future for our oceans and communities.
Shipping is responsible for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, contributing significantly to the climate crisis. The IMO's net-zero proposal is a vital opportunity to transition the maritime industry toward sustainability. Unfortunately, some political leaders have threatened to retaliate against states supporting this proposal, putting both our environment and international cooperation at risk.
We call on governments, regulatory bodies, and shipping companies to stand firm in support of ambitious climate action. The health of our oceans, the safety of coastal communities, and the future of global trade depend on decisive leadership and international solidarity.
Key Demands
- Adopt and enforce the IMO's net-zero emissions proposal for global shipping by 2050 or sooner.
- Implement transparent, science-based targets and reporting mechanisms for shipping emissions.
- Invest in research and development of zero-emission shipping technologies and fuels.
- Protect workers' rights and ensure a just transition for maritime workers affected by decarbonization.
- Reject political retaliation against states or organizations supporting climate action in shipping.
