Protect Pasadena Unified Students and Families: Demand Stronger Safeguards Against Immigration Raids and Disaster Impacts

Target: Pasadena Unified School District Board, Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Blanco, Pasadena City Council, and Mayor Victor Gordo

Goal: We urge PUSD leadership and local officials to implement stronger protections for immigrant families, enhance disaster recovery efforts, and ensure every child can learn in safety and dignity.

Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) students and families are facing unprecedented challenges. In the wake of the devastating Eaton fire and ongoing threats of immigration enforcement, our community's most vulnerable members need immediate and robust support.

As the new school year begins, nearly 14,000 PUSD students and their families are dealing with the dual crises of the Eaton fire's aftermath and the threat of stepped-up immigration enforcement. Recent ICE raids in Los Angeles County have spread fear throughout our community, despite no evidence that most detainees have criminal records. Many families are still recovering from the fire that killed at least 19 people, destroyed thousands of buildings, and left students and staff traumatized and displaced.

While PUSD has taken steps to restrict ICE access to campuses and provide trauma-informed support, more must be done. The district must go beyond current policies to ensure that no student or parent lives in fear, and that all families—regardless of immigration status—receive the resources they need to recover and thrive.

We call on PUSD and local officials to take bold action to protect our children, support immigrant families, and guarantee a safe and welcoming learning environment for all.
