Target: U.S. Secretary of State, U.S. Congress, and the United Nations Security Council
Goal: We call on the U.S. government to support the renewal and adequate funding of UNIFIL, ensuring that peacekeepers remain in Lebanon until the Lebanese Armed Forces are fully prepared to secure the border and maintain regional stability.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has played a crucial role in maintaining peace and monitoring the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon for decades. Despite criticism, its presence has helped prevent escalation and provided vital support to the Lebanese Armed Forces, who are not yet able to fully secure the southern border.
The Trump administration's plan to end UNIFIL’s mandate prematurely, coupled with drastic funding cuts, threatens to destabilize Lebanon and the wider region. European allies, including France and Italy, have warned that withdrawing peacekeepers before local forces are ready would leave a dangerous power vacuum, as seen in Mali and other conflict zones.
With Lebanon’s army overstretched and the country facing severe economic challenges, now is not the time to abandon international peacekeeping efforts. We urge the U.S. government to renew its commitment to UNIFIL, support adequate funding, and work with international partners to ensure a responsible transition that prioritizes peace and security for all communities in the region.
