Protect the Right to Protest: Defend Civil Liberties and Free Speech in Washington, D.C.

Target: U.S. Congress, Department of Justice, Washington, D.C. Mayor's Office, major media outlets

Goal: We call on elected officials, law enforcement agencies, and the media to respect and protect the right to peaceful protest, ensure transparency in government actions, and reject smear campaigns targeting activists and non-profit organizations.

Recent reports have sought to undermine the legitimacy of peaceful protest and civic engagement by disparaging demonstrators and spreading misinformation about their motives and funding. These attacks threaten the fundamental rights of assembly and free speech, which are cornerstones of democracy.

Peaceful protest is a constitutional right, not a privilege reserved for the few. Recent attempts to delegitimize public demonstrations by labeling them as 'color-revolution-style' or the work of a so-called 'protest industrial complex' are dangerous distractions from the real issues facing our communities. These narratives, often fueled by disinformation and xenophobia, aim to stifle dissent and silence the voices of everyday people demanding justice, equity, and accountability.

We reject the characterization of protesters as 'unhinged' or as pawns of foreign interests. Such rhetoric has historically been used to justify crackdowns on civil liberties and to intimidate those who exercise their rights. Instead, we affirm that protest is a vital tool for social change, and that non-profit organizations play a crucial role in facilitating civic participation and holding power to account.

We urge policymakers, law enforcement, and the media to uphold the First Amendment, refrain from demonizing activists, and ensure that all Americans can safely and freely participate in public demonstrations without fear of surveillance, harassment, or violence.
