Target: U.S. Congress, White House, State Department
Goal: Ensure that U.S. foreign policy towards Ukraine and Russia is conducted transparently, with robust Congressional oversight, meaningful public input, and protection for independent journalism.
In the wake of the recent Oval Office meeting involving President Trump, President Zelenskyy, and European leaders, there has been a disturbing trend of dismissing legitimate questions from journalists and downplaying the need for transparency in international negotiations. The American people have a right to know what deals are being discussed, whether Ukraine's sovereignty is being protected, and what commitments are being made in their name.
Attempts to frame media scrutiny as a 'stupid narrative' undermine the essential role of a free press in holding power to account. Instead of shutting down questions, our leaders must embrace transparency, provide clear information about the goals and outcomes of these summits, and ensure that diplomacy is not conducted behind closed doors at the expense of democracy and human rights.
We call on Congress and the administration to strengthen oversight of foreign policy, protect journalists' rights to ask tough questions, and guarantee that any agreements made with Russia or regarding Ukraine are subject to public and legislative review.
