Target: President of the United States, Department of Justice, and Congress
Goal: We call on federal authorities to halt militarized interventions in cities with declining crime rates and instead invest in community-based violence prevention and public health strategies.
In cities like Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Oakland, Black mayors and community organizations have achieved historic reductions in violent crime by investing in youth engagement, gun buyback programs, and public health approaches to violence prevention. Despite this progress, the federal government has responded with militarized interventions and funding cuts to anti-violence initiatives, undermining local efforts and perpetuating harmful stereotypes.
Deploying National Guard troops and federal agents not only disregards the expertise of municipal law enforcement and community organizations, but also creates an environment of fear and distrust. Such actions disproportionately impact communities of color and threaten to reverse the hard-won gains made through collaboration and innovation.
We urge the federal government to respect the leadership of Black mayors, restore funding for community-based programs, and end the use of federal forces in cities that have demonstrated effective, evidence-based crime reduction. Our communities deserve safety, dignity, and local control—not fear and occupation.
