Invest in Sustainable, Worker-Led Shipbuilding—Not Military Escalation

Target: U.S. Congress, President Joe Biden, Department of Defense

Goal: Urge Congress and the Biden administration to prioritize sustainable shipbuilding, labor rights, and peaceful cooperation over military escalation.

The U.S. government is seeking to partner with South Korea and Japan to expand its shipbuilding capacity, citing concerns about China’s growing naval power. Instead of prioritizing military expansion, we must demand investments that support workers, communities, and the environment.

The U.S. is falling behind China in shipbuilding, prompting lawmakers to seek expertise and partnerships with South Korea and Japan. While the need to revitalize American shipyards is clear, the current approach centers on military competition and massive Pentagon budgets. This risks fueling an arms race, diverting resources from domestic needs, and ignoring the concerns of workers and communities most affected by these policies.

We call for a new direction—one that invests in green, union-led shipbuilding, supports local economies, and advances peaceful international cooperation. Instead of pouring billions into military expansion, let’s create good jobs, protect the environment, and build a future based on diplomacy and shared prosperity.
