Target: President of the United States, U.S. Secretary of Defense, U.S. Congress, and Mayor of Washington, D.C.
Goal: We call for the immediate restoration of D.C.'s local control over its police department, the withdrawal of federal agents and military personnel from city streets, and a commitment to community-based public safety solutions.
On the heels of President Trump's declaration of 'Liberation Day,' the federal government has invoked Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act to place the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) under direct federal control. This move, accompanied by the deployment of hundreds of National Guard troops and federal agents from the FBI, DEA, and ATF, has transformed the atmosphere of our city.
While federal officials claim these actions are necessary for public safety, many D.C. residents are alarmed by the visible presence of armed agents in historically safe neighborhoods like Georgetown and the Wharf. This approach does not address the root causes of crime and undermines the principle of local self-determination for D.C. residents.
We believe that public safety is best achieved through community investment, local accountability, and policies that respect the autonomy of D.C.'s people. The current federal intervention threatens civil liberties and sets a dangerous precedent for the use of military force in civilian spaces.
