Target: Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Government of Canada
Goal: We call on Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Government of Canada to advocate for an open, democratic peace process in Ukraine, and to reject any secretive agreements that undermine Ukrainian sovereignty or exclude civil society.
With President Zelenskyy and world leaders, including U.S. President Trump and Russian President Putin, gathering to discuss the fate of Ukraine, we are deeply concerned about the lack of transparency and public accountability in these high-level negotiations. The recent meeting between Trump and Putin, which ended without a ceasefire or peace agreement, raises serious questions about the direction of these talks and the potential for decisions to be made without input from the Ukrainian people or international human rights observers.
We urge Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Canadian government to stand firmly for democratic values in all discussions regarding Ukraine. Canada must insist that any peace process be inclusive, transparent, and centered on the needs of civilians, refugees, and marginalized communities most impacted by the conflict. Secretive deals and backroom negotiations cannot deliver a just or lasting peace.
We demand that Canada use its influence to ensure that any agreements respect Ukraine’s sovereignty, uphold international law, and are subject to public scrutiny. The future of Ukraine should not be decided without the participation of its people and the broader international community.
