Demand Accountability and Environmental Justice in US-Venezuelan Oil Trade

Related Article: First two Venezuelan oil cargoes by Chevron after license depart to US - hellenicshippingnews.com - Sunday, August 17, 2025, 5:28:48 PM Eastern Daylight Time

Target: US Treasury Department, Chevron Corporation, US Congress

Goal: We call on the US Treasury Department, Chevron, and relevant authorities to implement transparent, just, and environmentally responsible practices in all dealings related to Venezuelan oil imports.

The recent resumption of Venezuelan oil exports to the United States by Chevron, following a new US Treasury license, has raised urgent concerns about transparency, environmental protection, and respect for Venezuelan sovereignty. As these oil shipments arrive in US refineries, we must ensure that corporate interests do not override human rights, climate justice, and the well-being of local communities in both countries.

The authorization granted to Chevron to resume Venezuelan oil exports marks a significant policy shift, but it also comes with serious risks. Historically, oil extraction in Venezuela has been linked to environmental degradation, labor abuses, and the undermining of local communities’ rights. The US must not allow a return to business as usual, where corporate profits are prioritized over people and the planet.

We demand full transparency in all agreements and shipments, strict adherence to environmental standards, and meaningful engagement with affected communities in Venezuela. The US must use its leverage to support democratic processes, human rights, and a just transition away from fossil fuels, rather than perpetuating extractive relationships that harm both nations.
