Target: President of the United States, Department of Justice, and Congress
Goal: We call on the federal government to respect local leadership, end militarized interventions in our cities, and restore funding for proven community-based violence prevention programs.
In cities like Washington, D.C., Chicago, Baltimore, Los Angeles, and Oakland, local governments and community organizations have achieved dramatic reductions in violent crime through innovative, people-centered strategies. Despite these successes, the federal government has deployed National Guard troops, threatened further interventions, and slashed funding for anti-violence programs.
These actions ignore the data and the lived experiences of residents. Crime is not 'rampant'—it is declining, thanks to investments in youth engagement, gun buybacks, and community partnerships. Militarized policing and curfews do not address root causes of violence; instead, they create fear and disproportionately harm young people and communities of color.
We urge federal officials to listen to local leaders and community advocates who know what works. Stop undermining their progress with sensational rhetoric and punitive measures. Instead, invest in real solutions that keep our neighborhoods safe and strong.
