Target: U.S. Congress and elected officials
Goal: We call on all members of Congress, regardless of party, to reaffirm their commitment to opposing Russian human rights abuses and to uphold the principles of the Magnitsky Act.
In 2012, the United States took a principled stand against Russian corruption and human rights abuses by passing the Magnitsky Act, with support from leaders across the political spectrum. Today, however, some elected officials are retreating from this commitment, reportedly out of fear of political repercussions. This retreat emboldens authoritarian leaders abroad and undermines America's role as a defender of democracy.
We must not allow partisan politics or personal loyalties to dictate our response to foreign authoritarianism. The U.S. must continue to stand with Russian dissidents, human rights defenders, and all those who fight for freedom and justice. We urge our representatives to publicly reaffirm their support for the Magnitsky Act and to condemn any attempts to normalize relations with regimes that violate human rights.
