Target: U.S. Congress, State Department, and the White House
Goal: Urge U.S. policymakers to formally recognize Somaliland’s independence and expand diplomatic, economic, and security ties with this resilient and democratic partner.
For over 30 years, Somaliland has stood out as a beacon of stability and democracy in the Horn of Africa. After declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland rebuilt its society through a unique blend of traditional governance and democratic institutions. It has held seven peaceful elections—including a 2024 presidential vote with 70% turnout and advanced biometric verification—while its neighbors face ongoing conflict and instability.
Despite maintaining its own currency, passports, and government, Somaliland remains unrecognized due to the African Union’s reluctance to alter colonial-era borders and Somalia’s territorial claims. This lack of recognition denies Somaliland access to international aid, investment, and diplomatic engagement, undermining its development and security potential.
Strategically located near the Red Sea, Somaliland offers the United States a stable partner to secure critical shipping lanes, counter terrorism, and access rare earth minerals essential for global technology. Its port of Berbera presents a vital alternative to Chinese-influenced Djibouti, strengthening U.S. influence in a region facing growing authoritarian expansion.
Recognizing Somaliland would reward a people who have rebuilt from the devastation of the 1988 Hargeisa bombings, and send a powerful message that the U.S. stands with those who choose democracy, stability, and peace. We call on our elected officials to break with outdated policies and support Somaliland’s rightful place in the international community.
