Target: U.S. Department of Transportation, Secretary Sean Duffy, and Members of Congress
Goal: We call on the U.S. Department of Transportation and Congress to immediately reinstate equity, labor, and environmental protections in the NEVI program to ensure a just and effective transition to electric transportation for all communities.
After a six-month freeze and legal battle, the Trump administration has restarted the NEVI program, which funds high-speed electric vehicle chargers along U.S. highways. While this is an important step, the administration has stripped out crucial requirements that ensured benefits for rural, underserved, and disadvantaged communities, as well as labor and safety standards and opportunities for minority-owned businesses.
These changes undermine the intent of Congress and the needs of communities most impacted by pollution and transportation inequities. Without these protections, the transition to clean transportation risks deepening existing disparities and missing an opportunity to create good jobs and resilient infrastructure.
We demand that the Department of Transportation and Congress restore these essential requirements to guarantee that the NEVI program serves all Americans fairly and effectively.
