Target: Nippon Steel, U.S. Steel Corporation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection
Goal: Ensure worker safety, protect community health, and require transparent, enforceable modernization and accountability at the Clairton coke plant.
The tragic explosion at U.S. Steel's Clairton plant, which killed two workers and injured ten others, is only the latest in a long series of preventable incidents at this aging facility. Despite repeated fines, lawsuits, and public health warnings, the plant continues to operate under hazardous conditions, endangering workers and exposing surrounding communities to toxic emissions.
U.S. Steel and its new owner, Nippon Steel, have made public commitments to invest in the Mon Valley. Yet, much of this investment is earmarked for production upgrades, not for the comprehensive safety, maintenance, and environmental improvements that are desperately needed. The plant has a documented history of insufficient maintenance, defective design, and environmental violations, as well as a pattern of prioritizing profits and shareholder returns over the well-being of workers and neighbors.
It is unacceptable for the Clairton plant to remain a relic of unsafe and polluting industrial practices. We demand transparent, enforceable action to protect lives, jobs, and the environment. The community and workforce deserve justice, safety, and a real say in the plant's future.
