Target: President of the United States, U.S. Attorney General, and Members of Congress
Goal: Restore local control over policing and justice in D.C., protect civil liberties, and prioritize community-based approaches to public safety.
Washington, D.C. residents deserve a justice system that is accountable to the people it serves—not one imposed by federal authorities. The recent takeover of D.C.'s policing by the federal government, spearheaded by Jeanine Pirro, disregards local voices and the proven benefits of community-based public safety programs.
This federalization threatens to erode civil liberties, particularly the right to protest and assemble. The dismissal of peaceful demonstrations as 'political theater' and the targeting of youth with harsher prosecution, rather than rehabilitation, will disproportionately harm minority communities and undermine trust in law enforcement.
We call on our leaders to respect the autonomy of D.C., invest in restorative justice and social services, and protect the constitutional rights of all residents. Public safety cannot be achieved through top-down crackdowns and mass arrests, but through meaningful engagement with the community and addressing root causes of violence.
