Protect D.C. Communities: End Federal Militarization and Invest in Real Safety Solutions

Target: President of the United States, Congress, Mayor of Washington, D.C., and D.C. City Council

Goal: We call on federal and local officials to immediately halt the militarization of D.C., respect the autonomy of its residents, and redirect resources toward proven, community-driven safety initiatives.

Recent actions by the federal government have brought National Guard troops and increased law enforcement to the streets of Washington, D.C., under the pretense of a crime crackdown. This approach ignores both the data showing historically low violent crime rates and the needs of D.C. residents for real investments in community safety, not military occupation.

The deployment of National Guard troops and federal law enforcement to Washington, D.C., is an alarming escalation that undermines the rights and safety of local residents. Despite claims of rampant crime, violent crime rates in D.C. are at a 30-year low, according to available statistics. The real needs of D.C. communities are being ignored while billions in federal funding for local safety and services remain withheld.

Militarized crackdowns do not address the root causes of crime and can disproportionately harm marginalized communities, including unhoused residents whose encampments have been forcibly cleared. D.C. deserves investment in housing, mental health services, youth programs, and community-based violence prevention—not more troops on the streets.

We urge our leaders to listen to D.C. residents, end the federal occupation, and fund real solutions that make our city safer for everyone.
