The United States is taking steps to reduce dependence on foreign sources for critical minerals essential to modern technologies and clean energy. However, the push to expand domestic mining and processing must not come at the expense of environmental justice, Indigenous rights, or workers’ well-being. Too often, extractive industries have polluted land, air, and water, disproportionately harming frontline communities, especially Indigenous peoples and communities of color.
As the DOE rolls out nearly $1 billion in funding for critical minerals, we call for a new approach—one that ensures a just transition for workers, robust environmental protections, and meaningful input from impacted communities. The U.S. can lead in sustainable, ethical supply chains by centering people and planet over profit.
