Prioritize Domestic Investment and Labor Rights in U.S. Shipbuilding Policy

Related Article: U.S. seeks shipbuilding expertise from South Korea and Japan to counter China - triblive.com - Sunday, August 17, 2025, 12:26:54 PM Eastern Daylight Time

Target: U.S. Congress, Department of Defense, Senate Armed Services Committee

Goal: We urge Congress and the Department of Defense to prioritize direct investment in American shipyards, protect union jobs, and ensure that any international cooperation in shipbuilding upholds strong labor and environmental standards.

The U.S. government is seeking foreign expertise and investment to revive its shipbuilding industry, with lawmakers exploring joint ventures with South Korea and Japan. While addressing capacity shortfalls is urgent, this approach risks sidelining American workers, undermining domestic industry, and ignoring labor and environmental standards.

The U.S. currently faces a critical shortage in shipbuilding capacity, with American commercial shipbuilding accounting for just 0.1% of global output. Lawmakers are now seeking joint ventures with South Korea and Japan to build and repair U.S. Navy auxiliary vessels, citing the need to counter China's rapid expansion.

However, relying on foreign investment and expertise risks undermining domestic shipyards, eroding unionized labor, and weakening environmental protections. The proposed $150 billion investment from South Korea and the acquisition of U.S. shipyards by foreign corporations raise concerns about long-term sovereignty, job quality, and community benefits.

Instead of outsourcing America's industrial future, we call for robust federal investment in public shipyards, support for union jobs, and a commitment to green shipbuilding practices. Any international collaboration must guarantee that workers' rights and environmental standards are not sacrificed for short-term gains.
