Target: U.S. Department of Defense, White House, Congressional Armed Services Committees
Goal: We call on U.S. government officials and military leadership to clarify protocols, uphold democratic values, and ensure that American service members are never again used to legitimize authoritarian leaders.
The arrival of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, marked by American soldiers kneeling to prepare a red carpet, has caused shock and dismay both domestically and internationally. Instead of a firm stance against a leader responsible for war crimes and aggression in Ukraine, the U.S. government facilitated a spectacle that was celebrated by the Kremlin and condemned by allies and advocates for democracy.
Such displays of deference not only undermine the sacrifices of American service members but also legitimize authoritarianism and send the wrong message to the world. The U.S. must stand firmly against war crimes and aggression, not roll out the red carpet—literally or figuratively—for those responsible.
We demand immediate action to reaffirm America's commitment to democratic values, to ensure accountability for those responsible for this display, and to prevent such incidents in the future. Our soldiers deserve respect, and our nation must not be complicit in legitimizing authoritarian leaders.
