Target: U.S. Congress, Department of Defense, and Senate Armed Services Committee
Goal: Ensure that any international shipbuilding agreements protect American jobs, uphold labor and environmental standards, and include public oversight.
The U.S. is falling behind in shipbuilding, with only 0.1% of global capacity compared to China's 53%. Lawmakers are now looking to South Korea and Japan for joint ventures and foreign investment to boost American shipyards. While increased capacity is important, we cannot allow these deals to undermine American workers, communities, or environmental protections.
Recent proposals include massive foreign investment and the acquisition of U.S. shipyards by overseas corporations. Without strong oversight, these deals risk offshoring good jobs, eroding labor standards, and putting profits over people. We demand that all agreements include transparent public oversight, strong labor protections, and a commitment to environmental sustainability.
Tell Congress and the Department of Defense: Any shipbuilding partnerships must put American workers and communities first!
