Target: President Donald Trump, Department of Defense, and Congressional Leadership
Goal: We call on President Trump and federal authorities to immediately withdraw armed National Guard troops from Washington, D.C., halt the destruction of homeless encampments, and invest in community-based solutions instead of militarized responses.
Washington, D.C. is currently experiencing a dramatic reduction in violent crime, with rates at a 30-year low. Despite this, the federal government has deployed roughly 800 armed National Guard troops throughout the city, including at the National Mall and Union Station. These troops have engaged in mass arrests and the destruction of homeless encampments, forcing vulnerable individuals into shelters or threatening them with arrest.
This militarized response is not only unnecessary, but it also violates the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits the military from engaging in local law enforcement activities. The presence of armed troops in public spaces is deeply troubling and sets a dangerous precedent for the use of military force against civilians.
Instead of investing in militarization, federal resources should be directed toward supporting local law enforcement through proper funding and addressing root causes of homelessness with compassionate, community-based solutions. We urge immediate action to protect the rights and dignity of D.C. residents and visitors.
