As world leaders prepare to meet in Washington, urgent concerns are rising over proposals that would pressure Ukraine into surrendering parts of its territory in exchange for a so-called 'peace deal.' True peace cannot be built on coerced concessions or the violation of a nation's sovereignty.

The recent shift in US policy away from securing a ceasefire in Ukraine toward a 'permanent peace agreement' has raised alarm among human rights advocates and the international community. Reports indicate that President Trump may pressure President Zelensky to accept a deal requiring Ukraine to withdraw from the Donetsk region of Donbas, legitimizing Russia’s illegal occupation and annexation of Ukrainian land.

Such an agreement would not only undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty but also set a dangerous precedent for international relations, where military aggression is rewarded with territorial gains. European leaders have expressed concern, and Ukraine’s President Zelensky has clearly stated that ceding Donbas is unacceptable and could invite further aggression.

We urge all negotiating parties to prioritize a genuine ceasefire, uphold international law, and ensure that any peace process centers the voices and rights of those most affected—the people of Ukraine. Peace built on justice, not coercion, is the only path to lasting stability in the region.
