Target: U.S. Congress, Kennedy Center Board of Trustees, National Endowment for the Arts
Goal: We call on Congress and the Kennedy Center’s leadership to restore independent governance, reinstate a bipartisan selection process for the Kennedy Center Honors, and safeguard the institution from political interference.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has stood for decades as a beacon of artistic achievement, honoring creators from all backgrounds and political beliefs. However, President Trump’s recent takeover—naming himself chairman, replacing the board with political loyalists, and assuming near-total control over honoree selection—undermines the Center’s mission and tradition.
This year’s Honors were personally announced by President Trump, who openly admitted to rejecting nominees he deemed 'too woke' or 'too liberal.' The bipartisan advisory committee, which once ensured a fair and representative process, has been sidelined. The exclusion of entire fields like dance, jazz, and classical music from this year’s honorees further erodes the Center’s commitment to artistic diversity.
Political interference in the arts stifles creativity, chills free expression, and diminishes the prestige of national honors. The Kennedy Center must remain a space where all artists are valued, regardless of political affiliation. We urge immediate action to restore the Center’s independence, protect its legacy, and ensure that future Honors reflect the true breadth of American culture.
