The ongoing war in Ukraine has caused immense suffering, displacement, and loss of life. Recent developments in international diplomacy threaten to sideline Ukraine’s agency in determining its own future. Reports indicate that President Trump and Russian President Putin have discussed proposals that would force Ukraine to cede territory in exchange for a ceasefire, without meaningful Ukrainian participation in the negotiations.
Such arrangements undermine the principles of sovereignty and self-determination enshrined in international law. History shows that peace imposed without justice or the consent of those most affected is neither lasting nor legitimate. Any deal that rewards military aggression sets a dangerous precedent and betrays the values of democracy and human rights.
