Target: Governors Patrick Morrisey (West Virginia), Henry McMaster (South Carolina), Mike DeWine (Ohio), and the Trump Administration
Goal: Demand an immediate halt to the deployment of out-of-state National Guard troops to Washington, DC, and call for the protection of civil liberties and community safety through non-militarized solutions.
We are deeply concerned by the decision to send hundreds of National Guard troops from West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio to Washington, DC, in response to a federal request for a 'crime crackdown.' This action, supported by thousands of police and federal law enforcement personnel, threatens to escalate tensions and undermine the rights of DC residents.
Militarized responses to public safety concerns do not address the root causes of crime or unrest. Instead, they risk further harm to communities, especially marginalized groups who are often disproportionately affected by aggressive policing. The presence of out-of-state troops in our nation's capital sets a dangerous precedent for the use of military force in civilian matters and erodes trust between communities and those sworn to protect them.
We call on state and federal leaders to prioritize community-based solutions, invest in social services, and respect the autonomy and civil liberties of DC residents. The deployment of National Guard troops for political crackdowns must end now.
