Target: U.S. Congress, President of the United States, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
Goal: Ensure strong, well-funded federal disaster response and climate adaptation programs that prioritize public safety, equity, and resilience for all communities.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the federal government—despite its flaws—eventually mobilized significant resources to help New Orleans and the Gulf Coast rebuild. Today, as climate disasters grow more frequent and devastating, this kind of support is at risk. Proposals to eliminate or weaken the Department of Education, cut global health initiatives, and even dismantle FEMA threaten our collective ability to respond to emergencies and protect vulnerable communities.
We cannot allow disaster relief to become politicized or dependent on state and local governments alone, who are often overwhelmed by the scale of modern crises. Federal leadership is essential not only for immediate relief but also for long-term recovery, infrastructure improvement, and climate resilience. We demand that our government recommit to serving every American—regardless of race, background, or political affiliation—by strengthening, not weakening, the systems that keep us safe.
