Target: Wisconsin State Legislature, Governor Tony Evers, U.S. Congress, and the President of the United States
Goal: We call on state and federal leaders to take immediate and effective steps to combat climate change, invest in flood prevention infrastructure, expand insurance coverage, and transition to clean energy to safeguard Wisconsin’s people and environment.
In the past week, southeast Wisconsin experienced over a foot of rain, flooding homes, roads, and public spaces, and causing millions of dollars in damage. Madison, too, saw significant rainfall, leading to canceled events and highlighting our vulnerability. This is not an isolated incident—extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. The last decade has been the hottest on record globally, and Wisconsin is already suffering the consequences: deadly floods, hazardous wildfire smoke, and threats to our agriculture and tourism industries.
Despite these clear warnings, too many elected officials continue to ignore or downplay the crisis. Most Wisconsin households lack flood insurance, and current policies and infrastructure are woefully inadequate to protect us from future disasters. It is unacceptable for our leaders to prioritize fossil fuel interests over the safety and well-being of their constituents. We need bold, immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, build resilient infrastructure, and ensure that all residents are protected from climate-related disasters.
We urge our representatives to act now to secure a livable future for all Wisconsinites. Climate change will not wait, and neither can we.
