For generations, HBCUs have empowered Black students to pursue higher education, fostered pride and resilience, and produced leaders across every sector. Yet, the majority of HBCUs remain concentrated in the South, leaving students in other regions—like Kei'Yanii Dawson in San Francisco—without local options for this unique and vital educational experience.
As DEI programs face unprecedented attacks at predominantly White institutions, the need for safe, affirming, and accessible HBCU campuses has never been greater. Expanding HBCUs to new communities will not only support Black students' academic success and sense of belonging, but also strengthen local economies and diversify the workforce in fields like tech, healthcare, and education.
Efforts are already underway in cities such as Boston and San Francisco, where officials are working to establish satellite HBCU campuses. These expansions will help close opportunity gaps, increase graduation rates, and provide a national model for excellence in education. We urge all stakeholders to act now to make HBCU education available to more students, regardless of geography.
