Defend the Autonomy and Rights of America's Cities

Related Article: Analysis: The common thread in Trump's latest moves: squeezing big blue cities | CNN Politics - us.cnn.com - Sunday, August 17, 2025, 6:29:21 AM Eastern Daylight Time

Target: U.S. Congress, Department of Justice, State Governors, and Federal Agencies

Goal: Protect the independence, representation, and funding of American cities from federal overreach and discriminatory policies.

Recent actions by the federal government have targeted major metropolitan areas, undermining their autonomy, political representation, and economic vitality. These moves threaten the foundation of local democracy and the well-being of millions of residents.

Across the country, large cities are facing unprecedented federal intervention that undermines local control, erodes political representation, and threatens economic stability. Deployments of federal law enforcement and military personnel into cities, often against the wishes of local officials, have disrupted communities and fostered distrust. Aggressive immigration enforcement tactics disproportionately target urban areas, leading to economic harm and fear among immigrant communities.

Additionally, efforts to redraw congressional districts and manipulate census counts threaten to dilute the political power of urban residents, particularly communities of color and immigrants. These actions risk shifting federal resources away from the cities that drive America's economy and innovation, while normalizing the presence of militarized forces in our neighborhoods.

We call on policymakers to respect the autonomy of cities, ensure fair representation, and protect the rights and well-being of all residents. Our democracy depends on vibrant, self-governing cities where local voices are heard and valued.
