The recent joint statement by European leaders and US President Donald Trump supporting a 'trilateral summit' with Russia and Ukraine signals a new phase in efforts to end the devastating war in Ukraine. While dialogue is essential, history shows that peace imposed from above—without full democratic participation and transparency—often fails to deliver justice or lasting stability.
We are alarmed by the prospect of secretive negotiations that could pressure Ukraine into concessions or undermine its right to choose its own alliances and future. Any process that excludes Ukrainian civil society, affected communities, and the broader public risks repeating the mistakes of past power-brokered deals.
We call on all parties to center Ukrainian voices, guarantee that no decisions about Ukraine are made without Ukraine, and ensure that any peace process is transparent, democratic, and upholds international law. The world must stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people—not just their leaders—and reject any deals that trade away sovereignty or justice for expediency.
