Demand Urgent Action on Climate-Driven Hurricanes and Strengthen Disaster Preparedness in the Caribbean

Related Article: Downgraded Hurricane Erin lashes Caribbean with rain - kulr8.com - Sunday, August 17, 2025, 5:59:48 AM Eastern Daylight Time

Target: US Congress, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Caribbean regional governments

Goal: We call on federal and regional authorities to take immediate, science-based action to address the climate crisis, reverse cuts to disaster response agencies, and protect vulnerable communities from the escalating dangers of extreme weather.

As Hurricane Erin lashes the Caribbean with torrential rain and dangerous winds, communities face increasing threats from rapidly intensifying storms fueled by climate change. The risk of flash floods, landslides, and life-threatening surf is growing, while critical agencies like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) face budget cuts that undermine our ability to forecast and respond to disasters.

Hurricane Erin, which rapidly intensified to a Category 5 storm before being downgraded, is a stark warning of the new reality facing the Caribbean and Atlantic regions. Scientists have linked the increased frequency and intensity of such storms to human-driven climate change, primarily caused by the burning of fossil fuels. The National Hurricane Center has warned of flash floods, landslides, and life-threatening surf threatening Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and neighboring islands.

Despite these escalating risks, NOAA and other critical agencies have faced budget cuts and layoffs, undermining their capacity to forecast storms and protect lives. We cannot afford to ignore the science or weaken our disaster preparedness. The safety and resilience of millions depend on robust climate action and fully funded emergency services.

We urge policymakers to act now to address the root causes of climate change, restore funding to essential agencies, and implement comprehensive disaster preparedness measures for all at-risk communities.
