Target: U.S. Congress, Department of Commerce, President of the United States
Goal: Ensure that any government intervention in the semiconductor industry is transparent, democratically accountable, and prioritizes workers, communities, and the public good over corporate profits or militarization.
The Trump administration’s plan to take a stake in Intel, America’s largest semiconductor manufacturer, marks a historic intervention in the high-tech economy. This move is being justified as a matter of national security, with the stated aim of reducing U.S. dependence on foreign chipmakers like TSMC amid rising tensions with China over Taiwan.
While strengthening domestic chip production is vital, we must ensure that this intervention does not simply serve corporate interests or escalate global conflict. Past government takeovers have too often lacked transparency and failed to deliver benefits to workers or the broader public. We cannot allow the semiconductor industry to be put on a permanent war footing, nor can we allow public funds to be funneled into private hands without oversight.
We call on policymakers to ensure that any nationalization or government stake in Intel or other semiconductor companies is subject to democratic oversight, includes strong labor protections, and guarantees that the benefits of public investment are shared broadly. This includes prioritizing green manufacturing, community investment, and the creation of good union jobs, rather than simply boosting military capacity or corporate profits.
We urge Congress, the Department of Commerce, and the President to adopt these demands as the foundation for any government action in the semiconductor industry.
