Target: President of the United States, U.S. Department of Justice, and Congress
Goal: Restore local control over D.C. policing, protect the city's sanctuary policies, and ensure the rights and dignity of all residents are upheld.
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the recent federal intervention in Washington, D.C.'s policing and public safety decisions. The President's declaration of a public safety emergency, activation of the National Guard, and attempts to override local police authority undermine D.C.'s autonomy and threaten the civil liberties of its residents.
Despite claims of rising crime, city officials have confirmed that crime rates are falling. The use of federal power to remove homeless encampments and direct local police to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement violates D.C.'s sanctuary city policies and targets some of our most vulnerable neighbors.
We call on federal authorities to respect D.C.'s right to self-governance, uphold sanctuary protections, and invest in community-based solutions that address root causes of inequality and insecurity. The recent reversal to leave the police chief in control is a step in the right direction, but further action is needed to fully restore local authority and protect all residents.
