Target: Ukrainian Government, International Human Rights Organizations, European Union
Goal: We call for immediate transparency, independent investigation, and protection of ethnic minority conscripts in Ukraine. Families deserve the truth, and all soldiers—regardless of ethnicity—deserve safety, respect, and accountability from authorities.
The war in Ukraine has claimed the lives of over sixty Hungarians from Transcarpathia since 2022, including conscripted soldiers, volunteers, and contract fighters. The most recent casualty, Zsolt Leco, leaves behind a grieving widow and child, with the circumstances of his death still undisclosed. Previous cases, such as that of József Sebestyén, have been shrouded in controversy and a lack of transparency, with families left uninformed and investigations incomplete.
Ethnic minorities in Ukraine, including Hungarians, have the right to clear information, fair treatment, and protection from discrimination or neglect. The international community must not ignore these repeated tragedies and the lack of accountability. We urge immediate action to protect minority conscripts, ensure families are informed, and guarantee independent investigations into all suspicious deaths.
We demand that the Ukrainian government, with oversight from international bodies, upholds the rights and dignity of all soldiers and their families, regardless of ethnicity. The lives and safety of minority communities cannot be collateral damage in this conflict.
