Goal: We call on lawmakers, the judiciary, and media organizations to defend free speech and press freedom by opposing the weaponization of defamation lawsuits to silence public debate and investigative reporting.
The threat of a $1 billion defamation lawsuit by Melania Trump against Hunter Biden, following disputed claims about her introduction to Donald Trump, is part of a troubling pattern. Powerful figures are increasingly using the threat of costly legal action to chill speech, discourage investigation, and suppress uncomfortable truths. While accuracy and accountability in reporting are essential, the use of lawsuits to intimidate critics undermines democratic discourse and the public's right to know.
Retractions and corrections are a normal part of responsible journalism, but the escalation to billion-dollar lawsuits is an abuse of power that can have a chilling effect on journalists, whistleblowers, and public figures. We must defend the right to free expression, especially when it involves scrutiny of those in power.
