Target: U.S. Department of Education, Secretary of Education, Congressional Education Committees
Goal: Urge the U.S. Department of Education and federal policymakers to permanently protect and expand DEI initiatives in all educational institutions, ensuring equal opportunity and safeguarding free speech for educators and students.
The Trump administration's attempt to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in schools and universities threatened to roll back decades of progress in making education accessible and fair for all. The Department of Education's memos, which threatened to cut federal funding from institutions supporting DEI, created a climate of fear and uncertainty for millions of educators and students. These actions undermined efforts to address systemic inequities and silenced important conversations about race, identity, and justice in the classroom.
Thanks to the efforts of educators, advocacy groups, and a recent federal court ruling, these anti-DEI policies have been struck down. However, the fight is not over. We must demand that our leaders take decisive action to protect and expand DEI initiatives, ensuring that every student—regardless of race, background, or identity—has access to a supportive and inclusive educational environment. Now is the time to affirm our commitment to civil rights, academic freedom, and the well-being of all students and educators.
