Goal: We demand that the Department of the Interior immediately end the forced removal of homeless encampments and instead adopt humane, housing-first solutions to address homelessness in Washington, DC.
The recent decision by the U.S. Department of the Interior to enforce a zero-tolerance policy on homeless encampments in Washington, DC, represents a harmful step backward in the fight for housing justice. Rather than addressing the root causes of homelessness, this policy prioritizes "beautification" and punitive measures over compassion and evidence-based solutions.
Forcibly removing people from encampments does not solve homelessness—it simply displaces vulnerable individuals, making it harder for them to access services, maintain community ties, and find stability.
