Target: U.S. Department of the Interior, Secretary of the Interior
Goal: We demand that the Department of the Interior immediately end the forced removal of homeless encampments and instead adopt humane, housing-first solutions to address homelessness in Washington, DC.
The recent decision by the U.S. Department of the Interior to enforce a zero-tolerance policy on homeless encampments in Washington, DC, represents a harmful step backward in the fight for housing justice. Rather than addressing the root causes of homelessness, this policy prioritizes "beautification" and punitive measures over compassion and evidence-based solutions.
Forcibly removing people from encampments does not solve homelessness—it simply displaces vulnerable individuals, making it harder for them to access services, maintain community ties, and find stability. The use of law enforcement, including U.S. Park Police with expanded powers, further endangers unhoused people and increases the risk of criminalization and trauma.
We call on the Department of the Interior to reverse this policy and work with local advocates, service providers, and unhoused residents to create real, lasting solutions based on housing, support, and dignity for all.
