Stop the Militarization of Washington, DC: Respect Local Autonomy and Human Rights

Recent actions by the federal government and several state administrations have resulted in the deployment of hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington, DC, under the pretext of addressing crime and homelessness. These measures undermine local governance, escalate tensions, and threaten the civil liberties of DC residents.

On August 11, President Trump invoked Section 740 of the 1973 Home Rule Act to assume control of Washington, DC's Metropolitan Police Department and deploy 800 National Guard members. This federal intervention has been further reinforced by the deployment of 300-400 troops from West Virginia, 200 from South Carolina, and 150 from Ohio. These actions, justified by exaggerated claims of crime and homelessness, are not supported by local data: DC police report a 26% decrease in violent crime and a 7% decrease in property crimes compared to last year.

The presence of armed troops in our nation's capital threatens the safety, autonomy, and civil rights of DC residents. It also stigmatizes and criminalizes people experiencing homelessness, rather than addressing the root causes of poverty and housing insecurity. We call on federal and state leaders to withdraw these deployments, restore local control, and invest in proven community-based solutions.
