Target: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, and the U.S. Congress

Goal: We call on the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Congress to enact immediate safeguards, transparency, and oversight measures to prevent conflicts of interest and ensure the FSIS acts in the public interest, not at the behest of powerful meat industry pl

The recent appointment of Justin Ransom, a former Tyson executive, as head of the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) raises serious concerns about conflicts of interest and public trust in the safety of the U.S. meat supply.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is entrusted with protecting public health by ensuring the safety of meat, poultry, and egg products in the United States. However, the appointment of Justin Ransom—a former senior executive at Tyson Foods, the nation's largest meat producer—to lead FSIS undermines public confidence in the agency's impartiality and effectiveness.

Ransom played a central role in launching Tyson's 'climate-friendly' Brazen Beef label, which was criticized for making unsubstantiated environmental claims and is now the subject of a lawsuit for misleading consumers. As FSIS administrator, Ransom will oversee label approvals for the same industry he previously served, creating an undeniable conflict of interest. Tyson is currently under investigation by the FSIS for alleged unfair business practices and has a documented history of animal welfare violations.

This revolving door between industry and government erodes the integrity of food safety oversight, especially when ethics regulations are weakened or unenforced. Without strict guardrails, there is a real risk that corporate interests will be placed above the health, safety, and rights of consumers, workers, and animals.

We demand urgent action to restore transparency, accountability, and public trust in the USDA's food safety mission.
