Target: President of the United States, Governors of West Virginia and South Carolina, U.S. Congress
Goal: We call for the immediate withdrawal of out-of-state National Guard troops from Washington, D.C., and demand respect for the autonomy and self-governance of local communities.
The deployment of hundreds of National Guard troops from West Virginia and South Carolina to Washington, D.C., is an alarming response to a manufactured crisis. Despite federal claims of rising crime, Justice Department data shows violent crime in D.C. is at a 30-year low. The use of military force to police civilians—especially in a city with its own elected leadership—undermines democratic norms and sets a dangerous precedent for federal intervention in local affairs.
National Guard troops are traditionally called upon for disaster relief, not to patrol city streets and intimidate residents. The decision to arm these troops and grant them police powers threatens civil liberties and the right to protest. This action follows a pattern of federal overreach, including recent deployments to Los Angeles against the wishes of local officials. Such militarization erodes trust between communities and the government, and risks unnecessary escalation and violence.
We urge all officials to respect D.C.'s right to self-governance, halt the use of military force against civilians, and prioritize community-based approaches to public safety.
