Target: President of the United States, Secretary of Defense, Governors of West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio, Mayor of Washington, D.C.
Goal: We call for an immediate halt to the deployment of additional National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. and demand that resources be redirected to community-based solutions that address the root causes of social issues.
In the past week, hundreds of National Guard troops from West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio have been activated and sent to Washington, D.C., joining federal law enforcement agencies in patrolling the city. This surge in military presence is being justified as a response to crime and homelessness, yet data from local agencies and the Department of Justice show that crime in D.C. has significantly decreased.
The deployment of armed troops into civilian neighborhoods not only undermines public trust but also diverts critical resources away from programs that could truly address the needs of D.C. residents, such as affordable housing, mental health care, and social services. The recent clearing of homeless encampments and increased patrols have further marginalized vulnerable populations, rather than offering them support and dignity.
We believe that public safety is best achieved through investment in community-driven initiatives, not through militarization. We urge decision-makers to listen to the voices of D.C. residents and prioritize real solutions over show-of-force tactics.
